What Is Grade Calculator?

The Grade Calculator operates in two modes. In Final Grade mode, enter your scores (with optional percentage weights) to calculate your weighted or unweighted average — perfect for determining your current standing in a class. In Needed Score mode, enter your current grade, desired final grade, and the weight of the final exam to find out exactly what score you need. The calculator shows letter grade equivalents and handles both equally-weighted and custom-weighted grading schemes.

Why Use Grade Calculator?

  • Two modes: calculate final grade or find needed exam score
  • Supports both weighted and unweighted grading
  • Shows letter grade equivalents
  • Essential for academic planning and exam preparation

Common Use Cases

Mid-Semester Check

Calculate your current standing based on completed assignments.

Final Exam Planning

Find out what you need on the final to achieve your target grade.

Grade Projection

Project your final grade with estimated scores on remaining work.

Course Planning

Decide whether to take a course pass/fail based on projected grade.

Technical Guide

For weighted average: Final Grade = Σ(scoreᵢ × weightᵢ) / Σ(weightᵢ), where weights are the percentage contribution of each score. For unweighted: Final Grade = Σ(scoreᵢ) / n (simple average). For the needed score calculation: Needed = (Desired − Current × (1 − FinalWeight/100)) / (FinalWeight/100). Letter grades follow the standard scale: 93+ = A, 90-92 = A-, 87-89 = B+, etc. If the needed score exceeds 100%, the desired grade may not be achievable through the final alone.

Tips & Best Practices

  • 1
If the needed score exceeds 100%, consider whether extra credit is available
  • 2
Weights should sum to 100% for accurate weighted grade calculations
  • 3
Without weights, all scores are averaged equally
  • 4
Check your syllabus for exact grade cutoffs — they may differ from the standard scale

Frequently Asked Questions

Q How do weighted grades work?
Each assignment category has a weight (e.g., homework 20%, midterm 30%, final 50%). Your final grade is the weighted sum: Σ(score × weight).
Q What if I need more than 100% on the final?
If the calculator shows you need over 100%, achieving your desired grade through the final alone is not possible without extra credit.
Q Should my weights add up to 100%?
Yes, for the most accurate result. If they don't, the calculator normalizes them, but the interpretation may differ from your syllabus.
Q Can I use this for curved grades?
This calculator uses raw scores. If your class is curved, the final letter grade may differ from what this calculator shows.
Q How do I calculate my grade with dropped scores?
Only enter the scores that count (after drops). The calculator will average the remaining scores.
