What Is GIF Resizer?

A GIF resizer that scales animated GIFs to new dimensions while keeping the animation intact. The tool decodes all frames, resizes each one using canvas interpolation, and re-encodes with the same frame timing. Aspect ratio lock prevents distortion. Quick percentage presets (25%, 50%, 75%, etc.) make common operations fast. All processing happens in the browser.

Why Use GIF Resizer?

  • Resize with aspect ratio lock to prevent distortion
  • Quick percentage presets (25%, 50%, 75%, 150%, 200%)
  • Animation timing preserved exactly
  • High-quality canvas interpolation for smooth results

Common Use Cases

File Size

Shrink GIF dimensions to dramatically reduce file size.

Social Media

Resize GIFs to meet platform dimension requirements.

Web Performance

Scale down animated content for faster page loads.

Chat/Messaging

Resize GIFs to fit chat platform limits.

Technical Guide

Each frame is decoded, drawn onto a source canvas at original dimensions, then drawn onto a target canvas at new dimensions using drawImage scaling. The browser applies bilinear interpolation during scaling. Resized frames are re-quantized to 256 colors and LZW-compressed. Frame delays from the original are preserved in the output. Aspect ratio lock calculates the corresponding dimension when one is changed.

Tips & Best Practices

  • 1
50% scale typically reduces file size by 60-75%
  • 2
Keep aspect ratio locked to avoid distortion
  • 3
Larger dimensions may increase file size significantly
  • 4
Combine with GIF Optimizer for maximum compression

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Animation preserved?
Yes — all frames and timing are preserved during resizing.
Q Max dimensions?
Up to 2000×2000px. Larger sizes may be slow to process.

Possible but not recommended — GIFs are already lossy.
Q File size impact?
Smaller dimensions significantly reduce file size.
Q Quality?
Browser interpolation provides smooth results for downscaling.
