What Is Holiday Calendar?

The Holiday Calendar displays major holidays for selected countries and years, organized chronologically with the day of the week and holiday type classification. Each holiday is tagged as a public holiday, observance, or religious holiday, and you can filter the list to show only specific types. The tool currently supports the United States and United Kingdom, with holidays calculated algorithmically (including movable dates like Easter, Thanksgiving, and bank holidays). Past holidays are dimmed and today's date is highlighted. The calendar handles complex date rules like "third Monday of January" for MLK Day and the Computus algorithm for Easter dating.

Why Use Holiday Calendar?

  • Algorithmically generated — no external API dependency
  • Supports US and UK holidays with accurate movable dates
  • Filter by type: public, observance, or religious
  • Works for any year including past and future
  • Visual distinction for past dates and current day
  • Includes day-of-week information for planning

Common Use Cases

Business Planning

Identify holidays that affect business operations, shipping, and customer service.

Travel Planning

Check for holidays at your destination to plan around closures or events.

HR & Payroll

Determine paid holidays and office closures for payroll and scheduling.

School Planning

Plan around holidays that affect school schedules and academic calendars.

Event Scheduling

Avoid scheduling events on major holidays by checking the calendar first.

Technical Guide

Holiday dates are calculated using JavaScript date arithmetic. Fixed holidays use simple Date constructors. Movable holidays use nth-weekday algorithms: nthWeekday(year, month, n, dayOfWeek) finds the nth occurrence of a given day in a given month by finding the first occurrence and adding (n-1) weeks. Last-weekday algorithms work backward from the last day of the month. Easter is calculated using the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm (Computus), which computes the date of Easter Sunday from the year using modular arithmetic. The UK bank holidays follow specific rules: Early May is the first Monday of May, Spring Bank Holiday is the last Monday of May, and Summer Bank Holiday is the last Monday of August.

Tips & Best Practices

  • 1
Check both public holidays and observances for complete coverage
  • 2
Use the filter to focus on only public holidays for business planning
  • 3
The holiday list is generated algorithmically — some special one-off holidays may not be included
  • 4
Pair with the Business Days Calculator for working-day calculations that account for holidays
  • 5
Check future years to plan annual events that don't conflict with major holidays

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Are all countries supported?
Currently the tool supports US and UK holidays. More countries will be added in future updates.
Q How are movable holidays calculated?
Movable holidays like Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November) and Easter use specific algorithms. Easter uses the Computus algorithm; others use nth-weekday calculations.
Q Does it include state/regional holidays?
Currently only national-level holidays are included. State or regional holidays may be added in a future update.
Q Can I use this for any year?
Yes, the algorithmic approach works for any year. However, the rules are based on current holiday legislation — historical years before certain holidays were established may be inaccurate.
Q Why are some holidays dimmed?
Holidays that have already passed (compared to today's date) are shown with reduced opacity for quick visual scanning of upcoming holidays.
